An imagination born between worlds
Ted grew up in a remote part of Indonesia, where his parents served as missionaries among the Dani people. His childhood unfolded between cultures, surrounded by a world vastly different from the one most of his readers would know. It was a life filled with wonder, but also with loneliness. His parents’ work often meant long periods apart, leaving him searching for a place where he belonged.
He found that place in his imagination.
Long before he created worlds for others to explore, Ted created them for himself. Stories became a way to make sense of unfamiliar surroundings, wrestle with difficult questions, and imagine life beyond what he could see. That early search for belonging would become a defining thread in his work.
A different kind of calling
After moving to the United States, Ted studied philosophy and religion and began a successful career in business. But success did not quiet his desire to tell stories. In the early 1990s, a visit with a friend who had written a book prompted him to pursue the possibility himself.
He wrote, rewrote, and learned to begin again. Years of developing manuscripts and refining his craft followed. Eventually, he sold his business, moved his family to the mountains of western Colorado, and devoted himself to writing full-time. His first published novel, Heaven’s Wager, introduced readers to the blend of suspense and spiritual discovery that would become central to his work.
The move was never simply a change of profession. It was a decision to pursue the work he found most meaningful: bringing truth to life through the experiences of his characters.
Stories that reach beyond the page
Ted’s books take readers into imagined worlds, through dangerous mysteries, and across ancient landscapes. In The Circle, reality stretches beyond the boundaries of the waking world. In A.D. 30 and A.D. 33, the journey leads into the time of Jesus. His work has earned multiple Christy Awards, including wins for Thr3e, Outlaw, and The Girl Behind the Red Rope, coauthored with his daughter Rachelle Dekker. His novels Thr3e and House have also been adapted into feature films.
